The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed former Los Angeles Rams defensive back Cameron McCutcheon to a future contract for the 2025 season, according to an announcement by the team on Tuesday.

McCutcheon, 24, spent the first two seasons of his NFL career with the Rams after being an undrafted free agent following the 2023 NFL Draft.

The second-year defensive back was among several players the Steelers worked out in September and earlier this month. He has spent most of his time in the NFL bouncing on and off Los Angeles’ practice squad.

McCutcheon has good size, standing at 6-foot-1, 200 pounds. At his Pro Day, he was measured to have 33-inch arms and ran a 4.57 40-yard dash, which fits the “Avatar” prototype the Steelers have recently looked for in their cornerbacks.

During his collegiate career at Western Carolina, he started 21 games in which he recorded 79 tackles (48 solo) and two interceptions. McCutcheon was one of four defenders and seven players on the team to start all 11 games during his final season.

McCutcheon transferred to Western Carolina from Gardner-Webb during the summer of 2021. During his time at Gardner-Webb, he amassed 87 tackles (63 solo), one interception and seven passes defended.

The Steelers are entering 2025 with a fairly thin secondary. Cornerback Donte Jackson, safety Damontae Kazee, special teamer and outside cornerback James Pierre, slot man Cam Sutton and injured reserve C.J. Henderson are all set to become free agents this offseason.

Of course, that doesn’t mean the Steelers won’t re-sign any of them, but the addition of McCutcheon gives them a little more depth heading into the 2025 season.
