PITTSBURGH — It is Steven Sims time for the Steelers in the slot. The former Kansas Jayhawk has been a standout receiver and return man throughout the entire process, including training camp and now into the regular season.

Speaking after practice on Wednesday, Diontae Johnson confirmed that Sims would have an elevated role in the offense, and he did in the first practice since Claypool was moved. With a lot of reps open in that area, Sims could be the one to take those snaps.

“He was in the slot a lot, actually,” Johnson said. “He looks comfortable, he will be ready to play.”

A four-year veteran, Sims has been around the NFL, including with the Washington Commanders. That was a learning experience for Sims, who had to step back and evaluate his NFL career after leaving Washington. Now grabbing onto a role in Pittsburgh, SIms has earned the respect of his fellow receivers.

“He’s a four-year vet,” Johnson said. “He’s been here a long time for you, so he knows the game of football. I know he’ll be ready when called”

Mike Tomlin has been repeatedly impressed by the work Sims has put out onto the field. It is at a level now that Steven Sims has earned significant snaps. As it stands, Sims should be in line for potentially over 50 percent of the snaps on offense given the Steelers’ heavy use of 11 personnel.

“He’s been making plays when called upon, and I think based on what we’ve seen, it’s reasonable to expect that to continue,” Tomlin said.

Sims provided a spark in the return game after Gunner Olszewski fumbled twice in four games, and against the Eagles, he was one of the few positives that the offense could take away from the game. It seems that a positive trend is now being rewarded by the coaching staff.
