Trade Deadline: Steelers Division Rival Trades Away Pro Bowl Pass Rusher

The Pittsburgh Steelers division rival Cleveland Browns sent Za'Darius Smith to the Detroit Lions at the trade deadline on Tuesday.

As the trade deadline approaches, the Pittsburgh Steelers are not only eyeing reinforcements, but also at what their division is trading for and away. After seeing the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals make trades for their offense, the Steelers watched the Cleveland Browns trade away a piece of their defense. On Tuesday morning, multiple reports indicated the Browns traded away their EDGE rusher Za’Darius Smith; who plays opposite Myles Garrett. This isn’t a complete surprise after the Browns fell to 2-7 on Sunday. This move made a world of sense for the Lions after losing their third-year EDGE rusher Aidan Hutchinson for the season.

Smith was originally acquired last season from the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for two fifth-round picks. He recorded 5.5 sacks in 16 games last season as part of a defense that helped the Browns secure a playoff berth. This season, he has already recorded 5 sacks in 7 games.

With a brutal final nine games on the schedule, including all six divisional games, the Steelers may be facing the Browns who are thinking about next year–twice. AFC North opponents shouldn’t be underestimated, but the Browns have been underwhelming after being considered a playoff contender. Now, they have lost their quarterback, leading receiver, and now a part of their defense.

It remains to be seen what moves Pittsburgh will make ahead of the trade deadline. Many expect the Steelers to at least pick up another wide receiver. It also remains to be seen if their division rival in Cleveland will be firing up any more sales to collect draft capital.
