Tyrann Mathieu

Pittsburgh Steelers free agent target safety Tyrann Mathieu is visiting the New Orleans Saints according to a report by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Mathieu is one of the top remaining free agents available, but his visit with the Saints will be his first free agency visit of the off-season.

Mathieu is reportedly a target of the Steelers to fill their strong safety spot opposite Minkah Fitzpartick, but it is unknown if the Steelers are willing to commit significant money to two players at the safety positions. The team is reportedly close to an extension with Fitzpatrick that is set to make him the highest paid safety in the league.

They do need a safety opposite Fitzpartick though, as former starter Terrell Edmunds has yet to sign anywhere. The team has made an offer to Edmunds though reportedly, and could look to reunite the duo. Edmunds started four seasons for Pittsburgh after being taken by them in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

A Matheiu-Fitzpatrick pairing would be one of the best safety combinations of all time given their talent levels.

The Saints also have quality safeties in CJ Gardner-Johnson and Marcus Williams in addition to top corner back Marshon Lattimore. The team could move Matheiu back to corner where he played in college or they could continue with a three-safety look after losing Malcolm Jenkins to retirement a week ago. Regardless the Saints secondary could also be one of the best combinations of all time with a Matheiu signing.

Wherever Matheiu signs, that NFL team will get a significant boost in their secondary. It will likely still be awhile before Matheiu does sing anywhere, as his visit with the Saints is the first such visit this off-season. With his level of talent, there are many teams interested including both the Saints and the Steelers.
