Why Won’t Mike Tomlin Play More Steelers Rookies Earlier?
Steelers Morning Rush: Why is it that Mike Tomlin will let Beanie Bishop start but not other Pittsburgh Steelers rookies?
Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single topic of news surround the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League.
Today, Alan dives into Mike Tomlin’s approach to playing rookies, which might seem inconsistent after the club released veteran slot cornerback Josiah Scott on Monday night, opening the door for undrafted free agent Beanie Bishop to be a wire-to-wire starter at slot cornerback.
Bishop is currently the only rookie regularly working with the first team, as tackle Troy Fautanu, center Zach Frazier, wide receiver Roman Wilson, linebacker Payton Wilson, guard Mason McCormick, defensive tackle Logan Lee and cornerback Ryan Watts have all been working with the second or third unit through the first four days of training camp.
So what gives? Alan breaks it all down:
