CBS Sports: Ben Roethlisberger, Mike Tomlin NFL’s 8th-Best QB-Coach Duo
CBS Sports has ranked Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and head coach Mike Tomlin as the eighth-best coach-quarterback duo in the NFL.
Even with a demoralizing Wildcard round playoff loss to the Cleveland Browns last season, CBS’ Jeff Kerr gives Roethlisberger and Tomlin credit for beginning the year 11-0 and past successes.
“Tomlin and Roethlisberger have accomplished plenty in their 14 seasons together, compiling a 127-63-1 record (.665 winning percentage), which includes seven AFC North titles, two Super Bowl appearances (winning Super Bowl XLIII), and an 8-8 record in the postseason,” Kerr wrote. “In turn, Roethlisberger has earned six Pro Bowl appearances, led the NFL in passing yards per game three times, and finished with a passer rating over 100 three times.”
Still, their recent postseason failures are certainly a knock against the two. Kerr still gives them the benefit of the doubt anyways.
“The Steelers are just 3-6 in the postseason since 2011, but Tomlin and Roethlisberger get the benefit of the doubt based on reputation,” Kerr writes. “Not many quarterback/head coach duos have a Super Bowl championship under their belt.”
The 39-year-old Roethlisberger is coming off a year that saw him pass for 3,803 yards and 33 touchdowns with ten interceptions. He also completed 65.6% of his passes and was sacked a career-low 13 times.
As for Tomlin, he has still yet to post a losing season in his head coaching career, tying Marty Schottenheimer for the most to begin a career. Since his hiring in 2007, Tomlin has accumulated a 145-78-1 (.650) record in the regular season, which is second-best only to the New England Patriots over that span.
Fresh off their win in Super Bowl LV, Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians and quarterback Tom Brady deservedly earned the top spot in the rankings.
