The Pittsburg Steelers are signing safety Terrell Edmunds off the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

The Steelers’ first-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Edmunds spent the first five seasons of his career in Pittsburgh. After the Steelers declined the fifth-year option on his contract for the 2022 season, Edmunds hit free agency and signed with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Edmunds said that he wanted to continue his career in Pittsburgh, but the sides were unable to reach a deal on a contract. The Steelers instead re-signed Damontae Kazee, who served as the team’s third safety in 2022. Edmunds decided to go elsewhere because he wanted a multi-year deal. He ended up signing a one-year deal with the Eagles anyway. He felt like he needed a clean slate and the Eagles provided a better opportunity.

On Oct. 23, 2023, the Eagles traded Terrell Edmunds to the Tennessee Titans along with a fifth-round pick and a sixth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft for safety Kevin Byard. Edmunds played nine games (started one) with the Titans to end the 2023 season. He wasn’t offered a contract in the offseason.

On May 16, 2024, Edmunds signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was released on August 27, and re-signed to the practice squad.

Edmunds started 75 games over five seasons in Pittsburgh and recorded 410 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, nine quarterback hits, two sacks, five interceptions and five passes defended.

It appears that Edmunds’ career is at a crossroads right now, so a return to Pittsburgh could be exactly what he needs. He’s still only 27 years old. Edmunds has been with four teams over the last two years. Edmunds was a solid player for the Steelers during his tenure, but he never lived up to his first-round pick billing.

Edmunds will reunite with All-Pro free safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, Damontae Kazee and Miles Killebrew. Jalen Elliott is the other backup safety on the 53-man roster. If elevated, Edmunds would backup or start in place of DeShon Elliott.

Jalen Elliott was a healthy scratch on Sunday, so maybe the Steelers are looking to get Edmunds on the 53-man roster sooner rather than later.
