PITTSBURGH — Russell Wilson took the first-team reps at quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, another sign that the veteran is set to make his 2024 debut this Sunday against the New York Jets.

Head coach Mike Tomlin said on Tuesday that he expected both Wilson and Justin Fields to work with the first team at some point this week. Wilson got the first go of it on Wednesday after working mostly with the second team the previous week.

“Yeah, he’s been out there the past couple of weeks,” tackle Dan Moore said. “It’s been good getting him in first team reps.”

Wilson was also first in the drill line at the position during the individual portion of practice.

Tomlin declined to reveal a plan for a starter at quarterback after practice on Wednesday. He is not scheduled to be available to the Pittsburgh media again until after practice on Friday.

Wilson spent the Steelers’ first five games dressed as the emergency third quarterback after re-injuring his right calf in the week leading up to the season opener. Kyle Allen dressed as Fields’ backup for each of the first five weeks.

Wilson was cleared to practice last week and was a full participant, but worked with the second team, while Tomlin said he was working the rust off after five weeks of relative inactivity. Wilson dressed as the backup to Fields for the Steelers’ Week 6 win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.

Wilson was named the team’s starting quarterback coming out of training camp, despite injuring his calf on the first day of camp and missing about half of it, and the first preseason game.

Fields completed a career-high 66.3% of his passes over six games, throwing for five touchdowns compared to one interception and running for another five.

Tomlin said it’s possible that Fields will remain involved in the game plan, even if Wilson starts.
