George Pickens: Russell Wilson to Start at QB for Steelers
Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver George Pickens let the cat out of the bag, saying that Russell Wilson will start at QB against the NY Jets.
PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said that he has a starting quarterback in mind for Sunday’s Week 7 game against the New York Jets, and while he’s told the team whether it will be Justin Fields or Russell Wilson, he’s keeping that decision “in house.” George Pickens apparently didn’t get that message.
Asked after practice on Friday whether or not Wilson had stepped up his work in relationship-building with the team’s wide receivers this week, Pickens said that he is indeed going to start.
“Getting on the same page after practice throwing,” Pickens said. “More than usual because this is his first start.”
It’s not as if Pickens was giving up the nuclear codes. It was reported by NFL Network that Wilson was going to start on Tuesday. Multiple players had confirmed throughout the week that Wilson had worked with the first team, and both Wilson and Fields seemed to strongly hint that Wilson would be the starter when they spoke with the media on Thursday.
Tomlin likely hopes to gain an advantage by forcing the Jets to prepare for both players, but it’s not clear how much of an advantage that really would be. Most Steelers offense players said the offense won’t change depending on which quarterback is in the game, though Fields is obviously a greater weapon to scramble and run.
Of course, he also could have just been trying to see which of his players would toe the party line and which would spill the beans when speaking to the press this week.
