Steelers Work Out Veteran Edge Rusher
The Pittsburgh Steelers worked out edge rusher Justin Hollins on Wednesday, according to NFL insider Aaron Wilson.
Hollins, who was selected in the fifth round by the Denver Broncos in the 2019 NFL Draft, has appeared in 67 career games. He’s mostly been a backup and special teams player, recording just seven starts. In his career, he’s posted 123 tackles, 10.5 sacks and three forced fumbles.
Hollins played just one season in Denver. He’s been a journeyman, playing for six different organizations. Last season, he was with the e Green Bay Packers, New York Giants and Los Chargers Chargers. All seven of Hollins’ starts came with the Los Angeles Rams.
Hollins recorded a career-high eight tackles (six solo), 2.0 sacks, one tackle for loss, and one forced fumble in the Rams’ regular season opener against the Chicago Bears in 2021. He appeared in all 16 games and played 339 snaps with the Rams during the 2020 regular season.
Hollins most recently was with the Washington Commanders. He was released during the team’s final cuts, but re-signed to their practice squad on Sept. 19. He was released on Oct. 8.
Hollins started 37 games at outside linebacker for the University of Oregon. Hollins is one of just 19 FBS players since 2000 with at least five sacks, five forced fumbles and an interception in a season. As a senior, he was East-West Shrine Game Defensive MVP and was named to the Associated Press Pac-12 All-Conference first team.
Steelers outside linebacker Alex Highsmith (groin) returned on Sunday night after being out since Week 4. With Nick Herbig (hamstring) still sidelined, the Steelers promoted outside linebacker Ade Ogundeji to the active roster from the practice squad for the game.
Herbig is expected to come back after the bye. Hollins could be a fallback option if Herbig is not ready for the Week 10 contest against the Washington Commanders. He also might be a better depth option than Jeremiah Moon and Ogundeji.
