Steelers Sign Rookie TE Kyle Markway, Waive/Injured TE Dax Raymond
The Steelers have signed former New York Giants tight end Kyle Markway and waived/injured tight end Dax Raymond, the team announced on Saturday.
Markway, who signed with the Giants as an undrafted rookie out of South Carolina earlier this offseason, was released by New York on Aug. 12 as the team attempted to address its depth at cornerback.
Markway’s agent, Brett Tessler, said there were two other teams interested in the service of the 6-foot-4, 250-pound tight end.
In three seasons with the Gamecocks, Markway caught 37 passes for 459 yards and three touchdowns, including 31 catches for 349 yards and two scores as a senior in 2019.
He missed the 2016 and 2017 seasons with injuries, and turned down the opportunity to pursue a sixth season at South Carolina to instead chase an NFL future.
The Steelers have been practicing without Raymond, who injured his ankle on the second day of padded practices on Tuesday. The team has Eric Ebron and Vance McDonald penciled in at the top of the depth chart, with Markway now battling Zach Gentry and Kevin Rader battling for the third and likely final roster spot.
Markway should be able to being practice on Saturday, which will be held from 6-8 p.m. at Heinz Field and broadcast on KDKA-TV and WDVE-FM.
Raymond was signed by the Steelers on July 20 after being waived earlier in the offseason by the Chicago Bears.
