As the free agency legal tampering period approaches, the Pittsburgh Steelers likely will want to have one of their quarterbacks under contract before then. Multiple reports indicate the Steelers are making Fields a priority. However, Warren Sharp of Sharp Football Analysis is not on board with this move.

On Tuesday, Sharp indicated that anyone believing in the Steelers competing in 2025 with Fields at quarterback is gaslighting themselves.

“My opinion has not changed … neither of these guys is capable of actually being a legitimate QB1 that’s going to take the Pittsburgh Steelers any place that actually matters,” Sharp said of the decision between Fields and Wilson–even dating back to last season.”

“I think you’re kidding yourself if you think this is the guy who’s actually going to lead the Steelers to anywhere meaningful in 2025.” Sharp said of Fields when it comes to him going toe-to-toe with Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow, or even Josh Allen.

While Fields’ career hasn’t been ideal up to this point, many around the league feel his potential remains untapped. Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith has previously praised Fields, even calling him a legitimate starting quarterback in the league.

Until the Steelers can truly be effective on offense, it won’t matter who the quarterback is, was, or will be. Pittsburgh’s offensive schemes have been ineffective aside from a handful of big plays since the turn of the decade.

Smith has done a good job, all things considered, however, most are waiting to see if he can replicate the 2019-2020 Tennessee Titans run. It starts with committing to a quarterback, but the clock is ticking on committing to Fields is ticking.
