Another QB Shoe Drops: NY Giants Add Veteran QB Jameis Winston

Another shoe in the 2025 NFL quarterback carousel has dropped, this one that may have importance for the Pittsburgh Steelers, as the New York Giants have signed veteran free agent quarterback Jameis Winston. Winston agreed a two-year, $8 million contract, according to a report by Jordan Schultz of FOX.
The Giants and Steelers are two of the primary teams still pursuing free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who visited with the Steelers on Friday, but there does not appear to be an end in sight to his decision saga, which has already stretched out a week and a half.

The move to add Winston could be seen as a parallel to the Steelers signing Mason Rudolph last week. He also signed a two-year $8 million contract. The move to add Rudolph gave the Steelers the piece of mind to wait our Rodgers as long as he needs to make his decision about whether he wants to play for the Steelers, Giants, neither or no one at all.
Now the Giants should have the same amount of piece of mind, with Winston able to serve as a backup, fill-in starter, or to potentially be a bridge to a quarterback the Giants could select in the 2025 NFL Draft. New York has the No. 3 overall pick in next month’s selection.
Signing Winston is not expected to remove the Giants from continuing to pursue Winston.
The only teams other than the Giants and Steelers that appear to still be in the quarterback market are the Minnesota Vikings, Cleveland Browns and perhaps the Tennessee Titans.
The Browns and Giants both hosted Steelers incumbent starter Russell Wilson for free agent visits. The Vikings had shown some level of interest in Rodgers, but they do not appear to still be involved in the process.
Winston, 30 started seven games for the Browns in 2024 as a replacement for injured starter Deshaun Watson.
