Watch: Ben Roethlisberger Congratulates Andrew McCutchen on 2,000th Hit

Former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was among a number of Pittsburgh professional athletes that contributed to a video scoreboard tribute for Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen on recording his 2,000th hit in Major League Baseball on Sunday.

The video was played after McCutchen hit a single to left off New York Mets right-hander Carlos Carrasco to lead off the first inning of Sunday’s game. McCutchen became the 291st player in MLB history to get 2,000 hits and the first to do it as a member of the Pirates since Willie Stargell in 1978.

Roethlisberger, former Pirates and Pine-Richland infielder and current Pirates broadcaster Neil Walker, and Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby were among those that provided scoreboard messages to McCutchen after the accomplishment.

“My brother, congratulations on 2,000 hits,” Roethlisberger said. “What an amazing accomplishment. Just proof of your hard work and dedication to your craft and your sport. I couldn’t be prouder of you, man. You’ve played this game at a very high level for a long time. It’s just so much fun to watch you play. I think one of the coolest things is that you were able to do this and hit this peak while wearing a Pirates uniform.”

McCutchen made his Pirates debut in 2009, and he, Roethlisberger and Crosby represented the peak of the city’s three professional franchises for nearly a decade together before the Pirates traded McCutchen in 2018.

The five-time All-Star and 2013 National League MVP returned to the Pirates and his adopted home town of Pittsburgh as a free agent this January.

Roethlisberger retired as the Steelers starting quarterback following the 2021 season, while Crosby continues to captain the Pittsburgh Penguins.
