The Cleveland Browns and representatives of quarterback Baker Mayfield reportedly met at the NFL Combine on Thursday to discuss his future under center, but won’t negotiate to extend his contract this offseason according to Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot.

According to Cabot, Browns brass reassured Mayfield that he will be their starter in 2022, and that the franchise will not pursue a veteran at the position to replace him. Cleveland general manager Andrew Berry and head coach Kevin Stefanski both reiterated those sentiments during their combine media availabilities.

Cabot also reports that the two sides agreed Mayfield will play the fifth and final year of rookie deal without an extension.

While Cleveland will finally get to make a decision on their future at quarterback, Mayfield will have the opportunity to either prove he’s the Browns’ long-term answer, or showcase his skills for a starting job elsewhere.

According to Cabot, Mayfield is ahead of schedule in the rehab process from the surgery he underwent to repair the torn labrum in his left, non-throwing shoulder.

Owning a 29-30 record as a starter, Mayfield has thrown for 14,125 yards and 92 touchdowns with 56 interceptions.

He was selected with the first pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
