Mayfield re-aggravated his shoulder in Cleveland’s loss to the Arizona Cardinals last Sunday. He initially suffered the injury attempting to make a tackle on an interception return against the Houston Texans on Sept. 19.
While he said it would ultimately be his decision whether or not he suited up for Thursday Night Football, he added that he would not play if his injury hampered the team.
According to ESPN’s Jake Trotter, Mayfield was advised against playing by both team doctors and the second opinion he sought. He could reportedly return on Oct. 31 against the Pittsburgh Steelers if his inflammation subsides.
