Pittsburgh Steelers captain and star defensive lineman Cam Heyward wants a new contract from the team, but the sides do not appear to be close. So, could Heyward be preparing for life after Pittsburgh? While he has stated he wants to be a ‘one-helmet player,’ the idea that he might have to go elsewhere has remained in his mind.

Talking with Mark Kaboly, Heyward said that he has spoken about the possibility with his family, and he is open to anything but enjoying where he is now with the Steelers.

“I have talked to my wife (Allie), and we know the reality, and we have had those talks, and she said it could be fun to play somewhere else,” Heyward said to Kaboly. “If that is what is needed to be done, then so be it.

Cam Heyward believes he still has multiple top years left because of his game and technique. His game is based on power, not speed or explosiveness, and it can age gracefully, as is seen with others such as Calais Campbell.

“My game is different from everybody else in this league,” Heyward said. “I like to think I can play the run and the pass. And that’s why I’m different. Last year Mike (Tomlin) brought to my attention, the thing that’s really cool is you watch powerlifters, and my game is built on power and technique. And (powerlifters) go into their 40s. And so, you know, that’s what kind of research I’m doing behind the scenes.”

The Steelers have a horde of contracts expiring after the season, and it could see the most significant changes made to the team at large in the Omar Khan era yet. Heyward would be the most drastic of any, but coming off a season with his groin injury at the age of 35, the Steelers are going into talks and the situation at large cautiously.
