Cameron Heyward Thought DK Metcalf was Going to Another AFC Team
Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle Cameron Heyward thought wide receiver DK Metcalf was going to be traded to another team in the AFC.

The Pittsburgh Steelers finally landed their bonafide No. 1 wide receiver this offseason, trading for Seattle Seahawks star DK Metcalf. However, defensive tackle Cameron Heyward didn’t think that is how things were going to play out.
Heyward recently revealed that he was under the impression that Metcalf was going to be traded to the Los Angeles Chargers.
“I was in California at the time and I heard DK was in town. Then someone was like, ‘Oh, he’s going to the Chargers,'” Heyward said on his “Not Just Football with Cam Heyward” podcast. “So I hit up one of my friends, Tracy Perlman, and she was like, ‘Yeah, I hear he might be going.'”
That didn’t stop Heyward from trying to recruit Metcalf to Pittsburgh, though. The longtime Steelers team captain made one last attempt to change Metcalf’s mind and the rest is history.
“I’m like, ‘Text DK and tell him to come with us,'” Heyward said. “And then like in the next week, he was already with us. I don’t know how that happened, but DK was all about it.”
It remains to be seen whether Heyward was the difference between Metcalf joining the Steelers over the Chargers, but he’s not willing to take any of praise.
“I didn’t do anything. Please do not give me credit,” Heyward said. “It was all Omar [Khan] and Mike T.”
Either way, the Steelers now have the offensive threat they’ve been searching for over a year.
Since being drafted in the second round (No. 64 overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft, Metcalf has 438 catches for 6,324 yards and 48 touchdowns and has never had less than 900 yards and five touchdowns in a season.
