Chargers Sign Former Steelers First-Round Pick
The Los Angeles Chargers have signed former Pittsburgh Steelers first-round pick Terrell Edmunds to their practice squad, the team announced on Thursday.
Edmunds began the season on the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad, but he eventually signed with the Steelers on their practice squad in September. He played in five games for them and recorded seven tackles (five solo).
His second stint with in Pittsburgh was short-lived, though. Ahead of the team’s Week 10 matchup against the Washington Commanders, the Steelers released him.
Edmunds, 27, was the Steelers’ first-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft and spent his first five NFL season in Pittsburgh before splitting the between the Philadelphia Eagles and Tennessee Titans last season.
Prior to re-joining the Steelers, Edmunds started 75 games over his first five seasons in the Steel City and recorded 417 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, nine quarterback hits, two sacks, five interceptions and five passes defended.
In 2023, Edmunds spent time with the Titans and Eagles, registering 48 tackles, 2.5 sacks, one forced fumble, one interception and two passes defensed.
During his first stint in Pittsburgh from 2018-22, he amassed 410 tackles (276 solo), five sacks, one fumble recovery, five interceptions and 26 passes defended.
Edmunds was a solid player for the Steelers during his tenure, but he never lived up to his first-round pick billing. Edmunds has been a journeymen of late, jumping from team to team. It appears his career is at a crossroads, but perhaps he could find a role with the Chargers.
The Chargers have clinched a playoff berth as a wild card team. L.A. is possible opponent for the Steelers in the playoffs.
If the Steelers beat the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday night coupled with a Baltimore Ravens loss to the Cleveland Browns, the Steelers would win the AFC North title and host the Chargers in the first round of the playoffs.
