Report: Chase Claypool Was a ‘Distraction’ Before Being Traded
The Steelers viewed Chase Claypool as a potential distraction and started looking to move him over two weeks ago, according to https://twitter.com/JosinaAnderson/status/1587506263537098753?s=20&t=1Yhkuhbq18dFctsl3HRPPg”>Josina
Anderson of CBS Sports.
While there were no super specific things on how Claypool became a distraction, it became evident over the that the Steelers were looking to move on from the relationship. According to Anderson, the move went on the table over two weeks ago as the Steelers started to shop Claypool around. That included asking for a McCaffrey-like deal at one point.
It was something that was authorized in part because Claypool felt he could be a No. 1 wide receiver, but the Steelers want to see more from rookie receiver George Pickens. So, they looked to move Claypool who they felt did not have a landlocked future in Pittsburgh.
It seems that many teams wanted Claypool. Not only were the Bears after him, but the Green Bay Packers were repeatedly linked to Claypool in trade rumors. They both offered up second-round picks, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. But the Steelers took the Bears second-round pick because they believe it will be a higher overall pick.
So, it seems there were plenty of minutiae that went into moving Chase Claypool. Regardless, the Steelers now are in line to have three picks in the Top-50 of the 2023 NFL Draft, and four in the Top-100. For a team entering a serious retooling period, that will benefit them greatly.
