Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes Sets Career-Best Mark in Win over Steelers
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes had a banner day in Wednesday’s 29-10 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, as the three-time Super Bowl champion completed 29 of 38 passes (76.3%) for 320 yards with three touchdowns, no interceptions, and a passer rating of 127.1.
The Steelers simply had no answer for Mahomes and his quick release. Mahomes’ 2.34 average time to throw against Pittsburgh was the fastest of his career, per TruMediaSports.
The Steelers did not sack Mahomes a single time on the afternoon. To say the least, the Chiefs made things look easy. It was like 7-on-7 for Mahomes and his receivers.
Similar to Tom Brady, Mahomes has shredded the Steelers in his career. In four games against the Steelers (all wins), he has completed 105 of 135 passes (77 percent) for 1,308 yards (9.68 yards per attempt) with 17 touchdowns, one interception, and a 143.5 passer rating.
On Kansas City’s first score, rookie speedster Xavier Worthy beat Steelers free safety Minkah Fitzpatrick to the flat for a 7-yard touchdown. That was the theme throughout the afternoon. The Steelers defense looked completely lost.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin gave credit to Mahomes for diagnosing their coverages.
“You know, some of the instances that he was open, we were in zone defense,” Tomlin said after the game. “You give credit to them and Mahomes in terms of diagonals and coverages. We were spinning the dial. We were playing some man, we were playing some zone, we were pressuring some. Most of the instances that he (Kelce) caught the ball — which is their norm — he is a zone killer. When in zone, he gets the ball. In a lot of those instances, we were in zone.”
Kelce, who led the Chiefs with eight receptions for 82 yards (10.5 average) and a touchdown, surpassed Tony Gonzalez for the most touchdown receptions in team history (77). Kelce was wide-open on his record-breaking touchdown. The Steelers left Kelce wide-open on several occasions in the game, especially in the middle of the field.
“I’ve been trying to get him a touchdown the last few weeks,” Mahomes said. “I wanted to do it at Arrowhead. … Happy we got it done in the regular season. Now we can just play football. He’s done so much for this organization on and off the field. For him to have the career that he’s had has been special. I know at the end of the day he wants to win the ring more than anything. It’s awesome he can have that accomplishment.”
