Could Jerry Jones Go All-In for Mike Tomlin?

With the Dallas Cowboys parting ways with head coach Mike McCarthy, could America’s Team pivot to Mike Tomlin? Former NFL quarterback and current analyst at FS1 Chase Daniel thinks Tomlin would be a perfect fit in Dallas.

“If I’m Jerry Jones … why not make a run at Mike Tomlin? Why not try to trade for him? If he doesn’t trade for him, Tomlin (should) say, ‘Hey, I need a fresh start.’ I just think the message in Dallas and what he can do with the Dallas Cowboys roster of players, building it there, I think it would be a fascinating move,” Daniel said on FS1’s The Facility. “I implore Jerry Jones to go and do that, because I know what Mike Tomlin is. Without a doubt, in my opinion, it makes the most sense in the world for Tomlin, if he were to leave, to then go to the Dallas Cowboys. Another big brand.”

Despite calls for Tomlin’s job from the majority of Steelers Nation, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported on Sunday morning that the Steelers have no interest in moving on from Tomlin, and Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported on Sunday afternoon that the team does not plan to do so.

While breaking down the Steelers’ Wild Card loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday, Schefter reiterated that the Steelers have fielded at least one trade call from a team that was interested in trading for Tomlin, but that team was told that Tomlin has a no-trade clause and that the Steelers have no interest in moving on from Tomlin at this time.

The Steelers might have no plans on moving on from Tomlin, but could Jerry Jones make an offer that they can’t refuse? Dorin Dickerson of 93.7 The Fan seriously thinks Jones will go all-in for Tomlin in a trade.

“I’m serious. I bet Jerry Jones calls on Tomlin,” Dickerson wrote on X.

Of course, Tomlin would have to agree to a trade. And Dallas might not be an ideal fit with how much power and control that Jones has. Former Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman did not mince words on Jones and the Cowboys job during an appearance on ESPN’s Monday Night Countdown.

“To say that it’s a coveted job, I’m not sure I would necessarily agree with that,” Aikman said. “I think most football people that take over as a head coach want to do it on their terms and that’s hard to do (in Dallas). I think Mike McCarthy is an outstanding football coach. He’s proven that in this league… But you also have to empower that head coach. And that’s been what has been missing in Dallas since Jimmy Johnson walked out the door.”

Deion Sanders and Jerry Jones have spoken about the Cowboys’ head coaching job, according to Jordan Schultz of FOX Sports. Their talks will continue. Coach Prime is considered a top candidate, though the Cowboys plan to interview other candidates as part of the process.

Whatever move Jones makes, it’s expected to be a flashy one. Trading for Tomlin certainly would rock the NFL landscape. It could be a win-win situation for both sides. Tomlin gets a fresh start in Dallas, while the Steelers get a boatload of draft capital and a new beginning, as well.
