One player that is being slightly forgotten about when talking about the Steelers secondary is Damontae Kazee. Of course, Minkah Fitzpatrick and Joey Porter Jr. are the stars of the secondary but for the group to be a top-tier group in 2024, they will need guys like Kazee to consistently contribute.
In his two seasons in the black-and-gold, Kazee has yet to play a complete season as he was suspended for violating the league’s substance policy and missed a portion of his first season on the injured reserve. Then in year two, Kazee was suspended again, this time for three games for an illegal hit on Colts wide receiver Michael Pittman.
While Kazee managed to return to the team for the AFC Wild Card loss, he played in a backup role and only saw 20 defensive snaps. On one of his 20 snaps, he made a costly mistake as Bills quarterback Josh Allen ran for a 52-yard touchdown and blew past a tackle attempt of Kazee’s in the process. Kazee said that his suspension was weighing on his mind which caused him to make the mistake.
“I was happy (to be back), but it did slow me down a little bit,” Kazee said at OTAs, via Joe Rutter of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “I’m wondering, ‘How do I approach people now.’ … He ran that fake slide on me, and it froze me up. ‘Do I take my shot?’ I don’t know.”
Kazee’s game is centered around throwing his body around and making big-time hits so since he was penalized for it, he began to question his entire mindset regarding playing defense.
“Do I let them catch the ball, do I wait till he catches it and looks at me before I make a tackle?” Kazee questioned. “There were a lot of things going through my head.”
After the season concluded and he had some time to digest everything that happened, Kazee knows he has to make slight changes to his game but is ready for that challenge.
“I definitely got to change,” Kazee said. “I have to. The NFL is changing, so I have to change with it. They are putting in new rules, and you have to adjust to it.”
Kazee is entering the second year of his two-year extension with the Steelers and after his up-and-down 2023 season, some predicted that the team could look in another direction. He is still in town so that seemed to be just a media rumor but the players hear those rumblings, too. Kazee did but his faith that he would still be a Steeler never wavered.
“Never in my mind,” Kazee said. “If it happens, I know how to move. I’m a vet. I have no hate in my heart. Just move on to the next.”
Kazee enters the 2024 season as a possible starter opposite of Fitzpatrick but after the team signed DeShon Elliott, it appears that Kazee and Elliott will play in down-specific roles opposite of Fitzpatrick. This will allow their skill sets to be fully utilized while letting Fitzpatrick play his patented “Minkah ball.”
