DB’s Steelers Film Room: New WR Ben Skowronek an Intriguing Chess Piece
DB's Steelers Film Room: New wide receiver Ben Skowronek is an intriguing chess piece for Arthur Smith's offense.
The state of the Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver room has been a massive topic of discussion throughout the offseason and during the final 53-man cuts, they were able to add former Los Angeles Ram Ben Skowronek to their practice squad. While he’s listed as a receiver by trade, it’s the versatility that the former seventh-round selection brings that makes him an intriguing fit within Arthur Smith’s offense. He checks a lot of boxes that the team would be looking for at depth in the position including size, physicality in the run blocking department and an extensive special teams resume.
SN analyst Derrick Bell breaks down Skowronek’s film by looking at how he could potentially provide value on offense, some of the creative ways in which he can be deployed and several reasons why he could be elevated to the active roster sooner rather than later. Having played for Sean McVay in his previous stop, he already possesses a good baseline for the basics of the scheme in place here in Pittsburgh and was used in such a way that it shouldn’t be overly difficult to get him up to speed. Skowronek isn’t the Steelers answer at WR2 by any means with the team needing to continue searching for internal and external options in that regard. But he can be a useful role player and is a good scheme fit for a roster that has been previously lacking in some of these areas.
