DK Metcalf Will Wear Single-Digit Number with Steelers

Newly acquired Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf will wear No. 4, the team announced on Thursday.
Metcalf wore No. 14 in high school, in college at Ole Miss and with the Seattle Seahawks, but George Pickens currently dons the digit. Metcalf said he never asked Pickens for the rights to wear No. 14. He’s excited to rock No. 4.
“No sir. (Pickens) has been here. He’s made a staple in the No. 14. I’m not trying to take away from anybody’s legacy. I’m just trying to build mine,” Metcalf said.
In regards to picking No, 4, Metcalf said “it just looked good.”
The last Steelers player to wear No. 4 was quarterback Kyle Allen, who was with the club last year. Metcalf is the first non-QB or specialist to wear No. 4 for the team since Andy Tomasic in 1946. Jordan Berry, Byron Leftwich and Josh Miller are some notable past Steelers to wear the number.
The Steelers acquired Metcalf in a blockbuster trade with the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night. General manager Omar Khan sent a 2025 second-round draft pick to the Seahawks for the All-Pro wideout. The teams also flipped picks in the sixth and seventh rounds.
The Steelers signed Metcalf to a five-year, $150 million contract. It’s the largest contact given out to an incoming player in franchise history.
Metcalf emphasized his faith in the Steelers front office to “make the correct decisions” to bring a quarterback in. He said he doesn’t know who and isn’t involved in that process.
In six seasons with the Seahawks, Metcalf has scored 48 touchdowns and made numerous highlight-reel catches.
He looks forward to playing alongside George Pickens.
Asked about sharing touches with Pickens, Metcalf said that first and foremost, “football is the ultimate team game,” but that everyone on the field should want the ball. “I feel like there’s some things that I can learn from him that he does.”
