Final Word: Do Steelers Need Deal with Cam Heyward Before Training Camp?
Final Word on WPXI: Do the Pittsburgh Steelers need to have a new deal in place with Cam Heyward before the start of training camp?
The Pittsburgh Steelers are on a five-week break after minicamp ended last Thursday, and are off as a team until they get back together for training camp. But just because the players are off, doesn’t mean that general manager Omar Khan won’t be working.
The Steelers have a half-dozen or so important players whose contracts are currently set to expire at the end of the 2024 season. As the team does not negotiate contract extensions during the season, this is the time when Khan and company usually get to work.
But who should be the priority? Defensive captain Cam Heyward has been vocal about wanting a new contract, sitting out a portion of OTAs while seeking an extension with the team, but he didn’t get one. Do the Steelers need a deal with Heyward before they return to work at training camp? Or maybe someone more involved in the team’s offensive game plan, like Najee Harris or Pat Freiermuth, should be the priority.
Alan Saunders of Steelers Now joined Jenna Harner from our partners at WPXI, Cale Berger of 93.7 The Fan, and Rob Rossi of The Athletic, to discuss whether signing Heyward should be a pre-camp priority. The gang also talked about what the Pittsburgh Pirates can do to build around Paul Skenes and what lessons the Pittsburgh Penguins should be learning from watching the Stanley Cup Final.
