The Miami Dolphins have waived former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Mathew Sexton to make way for their signing of veteran defensive tackle Calais Campbell, the team announced on Tuesday.
Sexton, 26, joined the Steelers in 2021 as an undrafted free agent. He had gone unsigned as a UDFA out of Michigan State during 2020 and played in The Spring League. Sexton caught the Steelers’ eye at a pro day the following spring and joined the team. He made a push for a roster spot as a return man, and led the team in the preseason with five punt returns for 86 yards, but he was released shortly after a fumbled punt. He caught two passes for 10 yards over three preseason games.
Since his release by the Steelers, Sexton has spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs, Atlanta Falcons, New England Patriots and Dolphins, but has not appeared in an NFL regular season game. He was with the Vegas Vipers of the XFL last spring, and caught 23 passes for 364 and returned 13 punts for 1010 yards and three kickoffs for 49 yards.
The Clinton, Michigan native racked up over 1,300 receiving yards while playing the MAC at Eastern Michigan and has earned those NFL opportunities due to his versatility as both a receiver and a returner. The 5-foot-10, 186-pound wideout ran a 4.44-second 40-yard dash, showcasing great long speed as part of a 5.58 out of 10 overall Relative Athletic Score.
Campbell, 38, will be the oldest defensive player in the NFL in 2024. The value of his one-year deal with the Dolphins has not been reported. He spent one season with the Atlanta Falcons in 2023 after his release by the Baltimore Ravens, where he spent the 2020-22 seasons.
