Eric Bieniemy Tabbed as Steelers OC Candidate

The Steelers will be in the market for an offensive coordinator this offseason. Multiple names have been thrown around, such as Brian Griese, Klint Kubiak, and Greg Roman. While all of those names make sense to varying degrees, there could be an offensive coordinator on the market that makes even more sense.

The Washington Football Team seems primed to move on from head coach Ron Rivera, which could expose the rest of the staff, too. Their offensive coordinator is Eric Bieniemy, the dynamic mentee of Andy Reid, who left under his wing to head to Washington this offseason. While the team is struggling as a whole, Bieniemy is thought to be a highly touted coach.

On Wednesday, Marcus Spears dished on the possibility that Bieniemy would leave Washington after this season. In this case, he sees the Steelers as the team that should swoop in and hire Bieniemy as their next offensive coordinator.

“If Eric Bienemy is out in Washington Because of new HC and He’s not the Guy to get it! The Steelers should be on the phone to acquire him for these young guys they have. If they grow up they are gonna be hell to deal with and I think he would be the OC for the Job. Challenge em,” Spears said on X. 

Bieniemy makes sense as a candidate with his experience under Reid, where he was considered a potential future head coach. While it has never become clear why Bieniemy has not landed a head coaching job, this is one of the main criticisms of the league’s hiring practices.

Regardless, Bieniemy’s first season outside of Reid has been rocky, with Sam Howell as an up-and-down player at quarterback, leading to many sacks. The team averages 20.1 points per game, though it is middle of the pack at yards per game. With strong years on the resume in Kansas City, this could be a hire that makes sense for Pittsburgh and could boost their offense.
