Ex-Broncos Offensive Lineman Rips Russell Wilson: ‘He Still Sucks’
Former Denver Broncos offensive lineman Mark Schlereth gave Russell Wilson some props when he was doing well earlier this year, but given the recent four-game slide, he’s back to ripping the nine-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion.
“All the apologies that I gave, it turns out that even when I’m wrong, I’m right,” Schlereth said on his Stinkin’ Truth podcast. “Even when I’m wrong, I’m right. He was great for like three or four games. I had to tip the cap and say he was great.
“But even in my incorrectness, I was correct. He still sucks. No, I mean, has he played better? Absolutely, he’s played better. There’s no question. Do I think the Pittsburgh Steelers can go into Baltimore with Russell Wilson and win? No way.”
Wilson ranks 30th out of 31 qualified quarterbacks in EPA per drop back over the last five weeks of the season. He also hasn’t thrown over 217 yards in a game dating back to Week 14.
“Russ has not been good. Russ does what Russ always does, takes a bunch of sacks trying to hold on to the ball, not throwing it in the middle of the middle of the field,” Schlereth said. “He’s regressed back to what I thought he was before he took over for Pittsburgh when they were 4-2.”
Dan Pizzuta of The 33rd Team tabbed Wilson as the worst quarterback in the playoffs.
“When Russell Wilson first came in as Pittsburgh’s starter, he rode some explosive downfield throws to victory. But in recent games without George Pickens on the field, those disappeared. Then, when Pickens returned against the Ravens in Week 18, they did not reappear,” Pizzuta wrote.
“Which version of the Steelers offense shows up? If Wilson’s moonballs don’t hit at a high rate — or even his willingness to throw them, which has gone from 15 percent from Weeks 7-13 to 11.4 percent since Week 14 — then Wilson doesn’t have much else to rely on. Since Week 14, he’s averaged -0.15 EPA per play, mostly due to the lack of deep ball impact.”
A lot is on the line for Wilson in Saturday night’s Wild Card game against the Baltimore Ravens. If things go haywire, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk thinks it could be his last game in the Black and Gold.
“If they lose on Saturday night, you think anyone wants Russell Wilson back next year?” Florio said on Pro Football Talk Live.
