Ex-NFL Offensive Lineman Thinks Justin Fields Gives Steelers Best Chance to Beat Ravens
With Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson’s deep decline over the last four games, former Denver Broncos offensive lineman Mark Schlereth thinks Pittsburgh should insert Justin Fields back into the starting lineup. He believes Fields gives the Steelers the best chance to upset the Baltimore Ravens in the Wild Card Round game on Saturday night.
“I may be crazy. But I think if you’re gonna put it out there and you’re gonna beat the Baltimore Ravens, I think the best option is Justin Fields,” Schlereth said on FS1’s Breakfast Ball. “The way they’re playing offensively, the struggles they’ve had as an offense where they’re at right now, not only running the ball but taking sacks, putting yourself behind the chains is a problem. And Russell Wilson has a history of taking sacks. In the last three games, he’s taken 12 sacks.”
While it’s unlikely that the Steelers make a change, implementing Fields into the offense could be beneficial for the Steelers, especially in the red zone. Head coach Mike Tomlin said on Monday that he’s open to utilizing Fields more.
“I’m certainly open to utilizing Justin. He has an awesome skillset. We’ve done some of that in the past. We’ve done less of it in recent weeks,” Tomlin said. “He experienced an injury, so a couple of weeks back, that slowed some of that, but certainly in an effort to win this game, I am open to any combination or combinations of the division of labor in an effort to do so.”
Fields was rather mum when asked if he’ll see playing time on Saturday night.
“I’m not sure. We’ll see,” Fields said.
He’ll be ready if called upon, however.
“If my number’s called, I’ll be ready to go,” he said.
