A man in South Florida claims to have seen Dwayne Haskins on I-595 just minutes before he was struck by a dump truck. Haskins was crossing I-595 when he was struck and killed by a dump truck, it is currently unknown why he was crossing.
Speaking to NBC 6 in South Florida, Chris Stanley said that he was driving his daughter to the airport when he noticed vehicles entering his lane. It was then that he noticed an individual with his arms raised up slightly start making his way onto the highway.
“He was about halfway, to a quarter way in the right lane already onto the highway and I was already concerned that somebody was going to strike him right there at that moment,” he said.
Stanley said he called the police and a call log confirmed that he did at 6:31 a.m. The crash reportedly occurred at 6:37 a.m., six minutes after Stanley’s phone call.
Stanley did not notice a vehicle that could’ve belonged to Haskins nor did he notice anything that could lead to a reasoning as to why Haskins was on the interstate.
Haskins was set to compete for the Pittsburgh Steelers’ starting quarterback position with Mitch Trubisky and Mason Rudolph. Haskins was in Florida to train with Trubisky and others on the team’s offense. Many across the NFL and sports’ world have expressed their condolences to Haskins’ family, friends and teammates. He was only 24 years old.
Haskins entered the NFL after being drafted by the Washington Redskins with the 15th overall pick. He had an incredible collegiate career that helped lead his alma mater Ohio State to redefine the quarterback position with the school. Haskins found his way onto the Steelers’ practice squad midway through his second NFL season, with the intention of competing to replace franchise quarterback Ben Roethlisberger once he retired following the 2021 season.
