The Atlanta Falcons have released former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver James Washington, the club announced on Sunday.

Washington, 28, had been attempting to make an NFL comeback with the Falcons after missing all of the 2023 season and most of the 2022 season with injuries. He signed in Atlanta on July 29, and appeared in two preseason games. He had two targets on Saturday against the Baltimore Ravens and one in the Falcons’ first preseason game, but did not have a catch.

A 5-foot-11, 216-pound native of Stamford, Texas, the Steelers drafted Washington in out of Oklahoma State in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He spent four seasons in Pittsburgh, racking up 1,629 yards and 11 touchdowns.

His best season came in 2019, when he hooked up with fellow Oklahoma State alum Mason Rudolph for 80 catches, 735 yards and three scores.
He signed with the Dallas Cowboys as a free agent in 2022 after his rookie contract expired, but played just two games in Dallas before injuries wrecked that season.

His one-deal with the Cowboys expired and, Washington spent time with the New York Giants, New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts in 2023, but did not appear in a game.

The Steelers have been desperately seeking wide receiver help, and Washington now makes three former Pittsburgh wide outs to be released in the last week. Chase Claypool was cut from the Buffalo Bills injured reserve list and JuJu Smith-Schuster was released by the New England Patriots.
