Final Word: Should Steelers Give Cam Heyward a New Contract?
Final Word on WPXI: Should the Pittsburgh Steelers give veteran defensive tackle and team captain Cam Hayward a new deal?
Pittsburgh Steelers defensive captain Cam Heyward told Steelers Now over the weekend that he wants to play for three more seasons before hanging up his cleats at the end of his NFL career. But the 35-year-old Steelers stalwart has only one season remaining on his contract with Pittsburgh. Heyward said there have been talks between him and the team about a potential extension.
Such a move could reduce Heyward’s salary cap hit for 2024 and allow the team to be even more aggressive in attempting to land a wide receiver in a trade, and secure the depth at the cornerback and outside linebacker positions, but with Heyward suffered a major injury at the start of the 2023 season, and never really returned to form after he came back, leaving the Steelers with a somewhat risky proposition to pay the aging star more than the $16 million he’s set to earn this season.
Alan Saunders of Steelers Now joined Jenna Harner from our partners at WPXI, Chris Carter of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Locked On Steelers and Mike DeFabo of The Athletic to discuss Heyward, as well as which Pittsburgh Steelers rookie from the NFL Draft Class of 2024 will make the biggest impact on the team this season. The gang also talked about the Pittsburgh Pirates, the debut of star prospect pitcher Paul Skenes, the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and celebrated Mother’s Day.
