PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker T.J. Watt won’t be making a career change any time soon.

The football star has tried his hand at acting recently, with two new TV commercials coming out in the days before the 2023 season, one where he reprises Adam Sandler’s character from The Waterboy in an ad for Old El Paso, and the other where he plays a metal head version of himself in a Snickers ad. Watt is not Bobby Boucher — who is? — and is no kind of metal head: “I wouldn’t know one song.”

But he seems to be enjoying taking the opportunity to show off some personality, which he admits can be a struggle for him at times.

“It’s always a lot more difficult when my brothers aren’t there to loosen me up,” Watt said. “Old Ed Paso was a fun one to do with Derek and J.J. and then Snickers was just a fun one, too. I showed some personality, but not too much. You should’ve seen the outfit that they wanted me to wear. I just settled for the chain around the jeans. Just having fun trying to show some personality.”

Watt has been in commercials with his brothers before. Oldest brother J.J. has also appeared on TV shows The League and New Girl and the movie Bad Moms. T.J. Watt said he didn’t try to pick his brother’s brain for any tips.

“No, I’ve seen that guy act before,” T.J. said. “He stinks.”

His solo performance in the Snickers ad has gotten the most reaction from his teammates, who have been throwing up metal horns and yelling “Viper Fury” at him in the halls of the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex.

“It’s all in good fun. I can take it.”

Watt said that even if Viper Fury were a real metal band, he probably wouldn’t be going to their concert.

“I’m into Zach Bryan right now big time.”
