First and 10: Browns Need Way Out of Deshaun Watson Saga

The Cleveland Browns need to find a way out of the Deshaun Watson mess they stepped in, and he just might have given them one.

Cleveland’s contract with Watson is fully guaranteed for $230 million, even if the quarterback gets suspended, a possibility that seems much more likely after a 24th complaint against him in civil court this week. The latest victim represented by attorney Tony Buzbee claims that Watson started masturbating during a massage and ejaculated on her.

The New York Times reported on Tuesday that as many as 66 women could have been victimized by Watson, and that the Houston Texans provided possible cover for his activities. As bad as that sounds for the Texans, it might be worse for the Browns, who could end up paying him a whole lot of money to not play quarterback.

But if you remember his introduction in Cleveland, the Browns said they were very confident that Watson was through the worst of his legal troubles. If he misrepresented the possibility of more victims coming forward, it’s possible they could use that to get out of the contract.

Baker Mayfield remains on the Cleveland roster, and the long-term relationship has been torpedoed, he could very well lead the Browns to a respectable 2022 season, and they don’t seem interested in having him long-term, anyway. They could ride Mayfield one more year and then figure out the future of their quarterback position next offseason.

As long as they aren’t writing giant checks to Watson.
