First and 10: Steelers GM Search Hitting Home Stretch

Steelers GM Kevin Colbert

The Steelers haven’t released a time frame for team president Art Rooney II to make a decision on a new general manger to replace the retiring Kevin Colbert, but as three reported second interviews get going this week, the search is shifting into its home stretch, and a detail about that process can give us a hint about how long the Steelers will take.

Head coach Mike Tomlin will be involved in this step of the interview process, Colbert and Rooney have said, after being pre-occupied by draft prep during the first round of interviews that happened in March.

Right now, most of the Steelers players are in town for the first phase of the team’s offseason workout program, and the team’s rookie minicamp will take place at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex this weekend.

But after a relatively slow this week and next, the Steelers’ offseason schedule will step up in intensity the week of March 22, when full-squad OTAs will begin for three consecutive weeks. At the very least, expect Tomlin’s role in the process to likely wrap up before then.
