Five Depth Players to Watch for Steelers Training Camp 2024
Five key depth players to watch for Pittsburgh Steelers during training camp at St. Vincent College in 2024.
Training camp is here and the Pittsburgh Steelers are gearing up for the 2024 NFL season. This year’s camp is particularly significant as the Steelers seek to rebound from last season’s inconsistency and build a roster capable of contending in the fiercely competitive AFC North, and with a back-loaded schedule, they’ll need to turn a strong training camp performance into early season success to have a hope of exceeding last season’s level of success.
With a mix of high-profile draft picks, under-the-radar talents, and established stars, the competition for positions and roster spots promises to be intense, well beyond the starting 22. Here are some of the key depth players to watch during this pivotal training camp.
TE Darnell Washington
Darnell Washington slid during the 2023 NFL Draft after some scouts suggested him being a first-round selection. Omar Khan and company ultimately swooped him in the third-round with the 93rd overall pick. Washington only racked up 7 catches for 61 yards as a rookie. The tight end’s unique combination of size, athleticism, and playmaking ability makes him a standout on the roster. Standing at 6-foot-7 and weighing 265 pounds, his physical presence sets him apart from a crowded tight end room. Washington has demonstrated impressive blocking skills, crucial for the Steelers’ ground game, and his soft hands and agility make him a reliable target in the passing game.
But he wasn’t used that much in the passing game last season. New offensive coordinator Arthur Smith has a lot longer history of adding a second tight end to the mix, and while Pat Freiermuth is unquestionably the starter, there are plenty of other pass-catchers in the room like Connor Heyward and MyCole Pruitt that would love to add some reps to their game, as well. Washington will have to show that he can handle an increased role, but if he can do that, with a year of NFL experience under his belt, he is poised to take on a more prominent role in the Steelers’ offense, making him a player to watch closely as he could be a key factor in Pittsburgh’s success this season.
OG Mason McCormick
The fourth-round selection out of South Dakota State is coming into Latrobe with a chip on his shoulder. Mason McCormick brings a gritty, hard-nosed playing style that fits perfectly with the Steelers’ storied tradition. Throughout OTAs and minicamp, he’s impressed coaches with his work ethic and quick adaptation to the NFL’s speed and complexity. With the Steelers looking to bolster their offensive line depth, McCormick’s performance in training camp could earn him a valuable roster spot and potentially significant playing time this season.
OLB Jeremiah Moon
The Steelers claimed Jeremiah Moon off waivers from the Ravens after Baltimore let him go three days before their AFC Championship belt against the Chefs in January. It is easy to imagine that Moon has motivation built up from his breakup with Baltimore coming into Latrobe. Moon’s ability to play both inside and outside linebacker provides the Steelers with a valuable asset in their defensive scheme. His speed, strength, and football IQ make him a standout candidate for a role in the upcoming season. As training camp progresses, coaches will be keen to see how Moon’s hard work translates onto the field, potentially making him a key contributor to the Steelers’ defensive success.
CB Darius Rush
The Steelers stashed Darius Rush in their back pocket ever since signing off the Chiefs practice squad during this past season. It will be interesting to see him be completely unleashed this summer after hardly seeing the field during his lone regular season in the black and gold. Rush’s impressive college career showcased his ability to effectively cover receivers and support the run defense. With the Steelers’ defense emphasizing speed and agility, Rush’s quickness and ball skills could earn him a role in the secondary in 2024. As training camp unfolds, his performance in drills and scrimmages will be closely monitored, as he aims to solidify his spot on the roster and contribute to a revitalized Steelers back half.
ST/LB Tyler Matakevich
A familiar face is returning to the Steel City after a four-year stint with the Buffalo Bills. Matakevich brings valuable experience and leadership to the Steelers’ special teams unit and linebacker corps. During his time in Buffalo, he sharpened his skills and became a standout special teams ace. Fans and coaches alike are eager to see how Matakevich’s seasoned presence will bolster the team as they aim for a successful season. Will the Steelers roster allow for both Matakevich and Miles Killebrew to stick? I am sure that Danny Smith will be campaigning for both of them to be on that final 53 when it comes down to a decision.
