Former All-Pro WR Would ‘100 Percent’ Play For Mike Tomlin
The Pittsburgh Steelers are in the market for a wide receiver once again and a former All-Pro seems interested in playing for Mike Tomlin.
A lot of Pittsburgh Steelers fans have entertained the idea of moving on from head coach Mike Tomlin following the team’s 28-14 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in the wild-card round of the playoffs. However, it may be Tomlin who is the difference in landing a former All-Pro wide receiver this offseason.
With quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ status with the New York Jets up in the air, some have begun speculating whether they could also move on from three-time All-Pro wide receiver Davante Adams.
On Tuesday, Adams joined “Up And Adams” and was asked if he would play for Tomlin.
His response: “Oh, 100 percent,” Adams said. “I love Mike. I think anytime you have a coach that’s a players coach and you can tell they’ve got a way with their guys, those types of coaches, whether they coach me or not, they always win me over.”
The Steelers have been in the market for another wide receiver since last offseason, during which they were connected to players such as San Francisco 49ers Brandon Aiyuk and Denver Broncos Courtland Sutton.
However, Pittsburgh was unsuccessful every time before ultimately landing wide receiver Mike Williams at the trade deadline.
Williams wasn’t bad in his limited snaps, registering nine catches for 132 yards and a touchdown in nine games, but he’s no Adams and is set to become a free agent.
Adams has amassed 957 catches for 11,844 yards and 103 touchdowns in his 11-year NFL career. The 32-year-old is on the backend of his career, but he still proved to be a viable option in 2024 while recording 85 catches for 1,063 yards and eight touchdowns with the Las Vegas Raiders and New York Jets.
It won’t as simple as just signing Adams, though. He is still under contract with the Jets for two more seasons, during which he is owed $36.25 million in each year.
It would be pretty safe to assume the Steelers would be willing to pay his contract, but what it would take to acquire him is up for debate.
Still, the first step in landing a talented player is making sure they have interest in joining the team. Adams is thanks to Tomlin.
“I’ve had nothing but respect for him and it’s been mutual. He’s talked to me during some games,” Adams said. “That says a lot about him. Obviously, a great coach, but he’s a hell of a dude, too.”
