Former Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Eric Ebron announced his retirement from football in a post on Instagram on Wednesday.

Ebron, 31, had not played competitively since his last season with the Steelers in 2021. He suffered a season-ending knee injury while playing with the Steelersthat year that required surgery, and did not sign with a team despite saying his knee was healthy enough to play in 2022.

The following season, Ebron announced a comeback, saying “Can’t wait to get back on the field this year! I HAD to let my body heal. Now, I feel better than ever,” but was again unable to secure an NFL gig.

On Wednesday, the former Steelers tight end announced the end of that comeback bid.

“A Career Is A Career!” he wrote on Instagram. “Im Proud Of Me! Thankful for everyone along this journey ?. #Retired

A Greensboro, North Carolina native, Ebron played at North Carolina and was a first-round draft pick of the Detroit Lions in 2014. Ebron played four seasons with the Lions, two with the Indianapolis Colts and two with the Steelers in his eight-year NFL career.

Ebron’s best season came in 2018 with Indianapolis, when he caught 66 passes for 750 yards and 13 touchdowns — all career highs. He was elected to his only Pro Bowl appearance.
