Eight years after leaving the University of Georgia early for the NFL, former Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker Jarvis Jones has graduated with a degree in Human Development and Family Science.
Not only did Jones complete his education by returning to Athens, but he also took on a leadership role with the football program as a student assistant coach.
“I think my biggest thing is being here for support. (Georgia head coach Kirby Smart) wanted me to show these guys the ropes, show them how we do it the Georgia way, be around for morale and just keeping the guys together,” Jones said. “It’s been awesome for me because at that time that Kirby called me, I had separated myself from football and I was trying to figure out the next thing I was going to do.”
Jones’ unique perspective and life experiences allowed him to step in and immediately proved Georgia’s players with guidance and support.
“It was a great opportunity and I stepped in and really enjoyed it,” Jones said. “I gravitated toward the players and a lot of the guys gravitated toward me. They asked me a lot of questions and I try to give them the information if I know it, and if I don’t I go search for it.”
A two-time All-American with the Bulldogs, Jones totaled 28 sacks and 44 tackles-for-loss over his two seasons at Georgia.
Selected in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft by Pittsburgh, Jones’ professional career was cut short due to injuries and a lack of production. He started 35 games over four seasons, but recorded just six sacks.
Almost a decade after playing his last down for the Bulldogs, Jarvis Jones, a two-time All-American, has something else to add to his list of accolades: UGA Graduate.
