Former Steelers Coach Bill Cowher Talks Ben Roethlisberger on ManningCast
Former Steelers head coach Bill Cowher, went onto the ManningCast, a broadcast of Monday Night Football that features the Manning brothers, Peyton and Eli, where they give their takes on the game and interview guests.
In this segment, the Manning brothers asked Cowher about his relationship with Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and other moments from his 12-year reign as Steelers head coach.
“He just represents what a Steeler is,” Cowher said on Roethlisberger’s career. “Grit, determination, and he has embraced every challenge that has been thrown at him, and just watching him grow. I only had him his first three years, but we were able to accomplish a lot. He’s just a great competitor.”
Cowher went on to praise the 2004 quarterback class, that also featured Eli Manning, who won two Super Bowls with the New York Giants, and Phillip Rivers, who played 17 years in the league, 16 with the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers.
“You guys [Rivers, Manning, Roethlisberger] were four-year college players,” Cowher said. “The maturity level that you all had, you understood the game and you were all great students of the game and your records speak for themselves.”
Cowher also talked with Roethlisberger before the game and told him about his elaborate game plan that he should implement against the Cleveland Browns.
“I texted with Ben [Roethlisberger] this afternoon and just told him, ‘Embrace the evening. You are one of the best fourth quarter comeback quarterbacks in the league, only behind Peyton, you, and Tom Brady.’ So I said how about this marvelous idea. How about the first quarters is the fourth quarter, then you play three overtimes? How about that gameplan for a game? Just keep it going, just come out there and have fun, stay in the shotgun, that’s where he’s comfortable.”
