Former Steelers RB Jerome Bettis to Play in American Century Championship
Former Steelers running back Jerome Bettis is hitting the links this week as part of the American Century Championship near Lake Tahoe, Nevada.
The celebrity golf tournament will be held at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in Stateline, Nevada this week, with practice rounds on Wednesday and Thursday and the three-round event taking place Friday, Saturday and Sunday, along with a long drive challenge on Saturday.
The event is contested in a modified Stableford format, with athletes from other sports making up the bulk of the field. The event raises money for charity and has a purse of $600,000.
Tennis star Mardy Fish won with a score of 76 in 2020. San Francisco 49ers lineman Kyle Williams, former MLB pitcher John Smoltz, Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry and Cleveland Browns quarterback Case Keenum rounded out the top five. Bettis finished 15th in 2020 with a score of 37.
Fish, Curry, Smoltz and Williams will return along with other celebrities and athletes like Marcus Allen, Charles Barkley, Vince Carter, Roger Clemens, Patrick Mahomes, Jerry Rice, Tony Romo, Justin Timberlake and Steve Young. Penguins owner Mario Lemieux won the tournament in 1998,
The first round will be broadcast Friday at 5 p.m. on NBC Sports Network and the second and final rounds will be on Saturday and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. on NBC.
