Former Steelers RB Lands with Commanders

Steelers RB Jeremy McNichols

Former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jeremy McNichols is re-signing with the Washington Commanders on a one-year deal, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

McNichols served as the Commanders No. 3 running back last year, rushing for 281 yards on 55 carries (4.7 average) and four touchdowns.

The 29-year-old running back has played on 10 NFL teams since coming into the league in 2017 as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He most notably played for the Tennessee Titans as the backup to Derrick Henry but he’s now find a home with the Commanders, posting a career best year in 2024. He also returned seven kickoffs for 164 yards and played 46 percent of the Commanders’ special teams snaps.

In Week 4 against the Arizona Cardinals, McNichols recorded eight carries for 68 yards (8.5 average) and two touchdowns.

McNichols signed with the Commanders last year shortly after Adam Peters became the general manager in Washington. Peters worked in their personnel department in San Francisco during McNichols’ two stints with the 49ers, so the two have a long history.

McNichols was signed by the Steelers at the beginning of training camp in 2022 before suffering a shoulder injury that put him on the shelf.

Pittsburgh was searching for help with running back depth before they knew just how good Jaylen Warren was last year in training camp. McNichols’ injury was one of the catalysts that allowed Warren to showcase consistently what he could do in a training camp setting.
