Georgia Bulldogs offensive coordinator Todd Monken is a potential name to watch for NFL offensive coordinator openings, according to a report by Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.
The Los Angeles Rams, New York Jets, Tennessee Titans and Washington Commanders are all currently searching for offensive coordinators and it’s likely that some of the five teams that are looking for new head coaches will also need new coordinators.
It’s unclear if the Pittsburgh Steelers will join that list, as the club has not updated the status of offensive coordinator Matt Canada after finishing his second season at the helm of the Pittsburgh offense a week ago Sunday.
The Steelers finished the 2022 regular season ranked 26th in the NFL in points, 23rd in yards, 24th in passing yards, 16th in rushing yards and 27th in yards per play. Most of those rankings came near or below Canada’s first season in 2021.
If the Steelers decide to move on from Canada and are looking for a coach that can combine college success and NFL experience, Monken could be the man.
A 56-year-old Illinois native, Monken was a wide receivers coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars and had two NFL stops as an offensive coordinator before joining the Bulldogs in 2020. Georgia has won back-to-back national titles with Monken’s offense in place and he’s already sent a number of players, including Steelers wide receiver George Pickens, on to NFL success.
Monken’s two NFL stints both ended when the head coach he worked for was fired, but his level ofsuccess in the league was mixed. His 2018 Tampa Bay Buccaneers team finished 12th in the league in scoring and the 2019 Cleveland Browns were 22nd.
The Steelers have no obvious ties to Monken, but he certainly could be someone the team may have interest in if they decide to move on from Canada.
