J.J. Watt, who was an analyst on the CBS’ studio show NFL Today, is moving to the broadcast booth full-time starting this upcoming season. He’ll be a part of CBS’ No. 2 crew alongside Ian Eagle.

Watt called the Steelers-Chiefs Christmas Day last season with Eagle on Netflix. It was the first time that Watt was in the booth as a color analyst. The future Hall of Famer joined the CBS NFL Today show in 2023 after retiring from a 12-year career.

With Watt joining CBS’ No. 2 crew, there’s a strong possibility that he’ll call several Pittsburgh Steelers games in 2025.

In a statement about his new role at CBS, Watt said “there is nothing better than the energy and excitement of being in the stadium on game day in the NFL.”

“I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to return to that atmosphere each week, working with one of the best in Ian,” Watt said. “While I certainly miss delivering hits on the field, it will be nice to leave the stadium without taking any, unless Ian decides to try something crazy.”

CBS Sports is excited to have the three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year and the 2017 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year in the booth.

“J.J. is one of the greatest players in the history of the NFL, and a future Hall of Famer,” said David Berson, President and CEO, CBS Sports. “Over the last two years – as a studio analyst and on social media – he’s connected with fans through his passion, insight and desire to truly have fun. We can’t wait for him to now entertain viewers as a game analyst. Listening to J.J. and Ian together each week will be a real treat for NFL fans.”

Watt replaces Charles Davis as a color analyst on CBS’ No. 2 crew. Davis is replacing CBS’ lead college football analyst Gary Danielson after the 2025 season. CBS announced earlier this week that Danielson will retire after this year.

CBS said Davis will remain a part of the NFL game-calling crew in 2025 but his role is unclear as of now.
