The Pittsburgh Steelers waived/injured cornerback Luq Barcoo on Monday. On Tuesday, he officially cleared waivers, meaning he will revert to the Steelers injured reserve list, according to the NFL Transaction Wire.. Pittsburgh did this once in off-season training activities when they waived/injured wide receiver Keilahn Harris two weeks ago. Once he reverted to the team’s injured reserve, they released him from injured reserve with an injury settlement.
Pittsburgh can do the same with Barcoo if they wish. If they choose to do that, they would have to wait a significant amount of time before they are permitted to re-sign Barcoo. At that point in the process, Barcoo would be free to sign with whoever he wishes.
Pittsburgh signed Barcoo out of the XFL a year ago, and while he played well with the San Antonio Brahmas, that is not his calling card. Barcoo nabbed nine interceptions while at San Diego State in 2019, and no one has touched that mark since Barcoo did it.
To fill the void left by Barcoo, the Steelers are signing defensive back Grayland Arnold. Arnold has experience at safety more than cornerback but has played over 100 snaps of slot cornerback. Coming out of Baylor, Arnold was undrafted and signed with the Philadelphia Eagles. Since that time, he had a stint with the Houston Texans but should slot into Pittsburgh’s slot cornerback competition as another player to watch.
