Justin Fields Spurns Steelers Offer, Signs with Jets

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields has agreed to a two-year contract with the New York Jets, spurning an opportunity to return to Pittsburgh, according to multiple reports.
With Fields and Sam Darnold both off the table, the Steelers will be left to pick from the group of Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, or possibly Daniel Jones as their quarterback for the 2025 season.

Fields came to the Steelers via trade from the Chicago Bears last offseason. He mostly served as the team’s backup to starter Russell Wilson, though Fields did start the first six games of the 2024 season while Wilson dealt with a calf injury.
In those games, Fields led the Steelers to a 4-2 record, though he did so with an uninspiring statistical performance. He finished the season completing 106 of 161 passes for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. He maintained a 93.3 passer rating. Fields also rushed 62 times for 289 yards and five touchdowns, but fumbled six times.
Fields will now replace Rodgers in New York, and Rodgers could very well replace Fields and Wilson in Pittsburgh.
This signing will count toward the Steelers compensatory draft picks for 2026, which were already given a boots when left tackle Dan Moore Jr. signed a four-year $82 million deal with the Tennessee Titans.
The contract is a two-year deal worth $40 million, according to a report by Adam Schefter of ESPN. Fields was the Steelers’ first priority at quarterback for the 2025 season, but the team and his representation were not able to reach a deal.
