The Kansas City Chiefs are on top of the football world once again. All-Pro quarterback Patrick Mahomes engineered a 13-play, 75-yard game-winning touchdown drive in overtime to take down the San Francisco 49ers , 22-19, in Super Bowl LVIII at Allegiant Stadium. For the third time in five seasons, the Chiefs are Super Bowl Champions. They are officially the new dynasty.

Kansas City become the ninth team in the Super Bowl era to win back-to-back Super Bowls. They’re the first team to do it since the 2003-2004 New England Patriots. Mahomes joined Troy Aikman (3), Joe Montana (4), Terry Bradshaw (4) and Tom Brady (7) as the only quarterbacks to win at least three Super Bowls.

Head coach Andy Reid also entered an elite group, joining Joe Gibbs (3), Bill Walsh (3), Chuck Noll (4) and Bill Belichick as the only head coaches to win at least three Super Bowls.

The NFL’s first Super Bowl in Las Vegas started off slow and was very sloppy. It was a field goal fest and it honestly looked an early season game. Things picked up in the second half with both teams trading possessions with touchdowns and field goals.

At the end of the fourth quarter, Jake Moody nailed a 53-yard field goal to put the 49ers up 19-16. Mahomes answered with an 11-play, 64-yard drive to set Harrison Butker up for a 29-yard field goal to send the game to overtime, which he converted. Both kickers were tremendous. It marked the first Super Bowl under the new overtime format. It was the second overtime Super Bowl game ever, following Super Bowl LI.

The 49ers got the ball first in overtime and drove down the field, but the drive stalled at the Chiefs 9-yard line, and they settled for a 27-yard field goal by Moody.

On fourth-and-1 from the Chiefs 34-yard line, San Francisco had an opportunity to end the game, but Mahomes ran 8 yards to keep the Chiefs’ chances alive. He then scrambled 19 yards to set up the game-winner, a 3-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Mecole Hardman with 3 seconds remaining in the first overtime.

Mahomes displayed why he’s one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game. His clutchness is very similar to past greats such as Joe Montanta and Tom Brady. He’s now a three-time Super Bowl champion, three-time Super Bowl MVP and a two-time League MVP. He’s only 28, too.

Mahomes completed 34 of 46 passes (73.9%) for 333 yards with two touchdowns, one interception, and a passer rating of 99.3. Mahomes also led the Chiefs in rushing with 66 yards on nine carries (7.3 average). Travis Kelce was Mahomes’ leading receiver, catching nine passes for 93 yards (10.3 average).

49ers quarterback Brock Purdy played well for his first Super Bowl, but it was just not enough to get past Mahomes. He completed 23 of 38 passes (60.5%) for 255 yards with one touchdown, no interceptions, and a passer rating of 89.3.

Christian McCaffrey had a standout performance with 80 yards rushing on 22 carries (3.6 average) and 80 yards receiving on eight catches (10.0 average) and a touchdown. Wide receiver Juan Jennings threw a touchdown pass to McCaffrey and caught a touchdown pass. Overall, he had four receptions for 42 yards. He most likely would have won MVP if the 49ers won.

It’s Kyle Shanahan’s third loss in the Super Bowl — once with the Atlanta Falcons as an offensive coordinator in Super Bowl LI and twice with the 49ers as head coach, both to Kansas City. Shanahan had a lead of 10 points or more in all three losses.
