Kwon Alexander Laying the Hammer at Steelers Training Camp
UNITY TWP., Pa — Kwon Alexander did not come to Latrobe to play nice. Coming off just one day of practice without pads and learning a new playbook, Alexander looks like he’s comfortable in pads. Perhaps too comfortable for the running backs’ liking.
But no matter the situation, Kwon Alexander is going to lay the wood down. If there is one thing that the Steelers linebacker has taught viewers and players alike in his first three practices, it is that he relishes the ability to lay the hammer down. Alexander as done so to a clinic of popping pads.
“I put the pads on and I hit,” https://twitter.com/FarabaughFB/status/1686439871907336192?s=20″>Alexander
said. “As you can see. You can go watch the film.”
That’s the kind of nonchalant attitude that Alexander has about the game of football. He is a linebacker that specializes in coverage and yet he is a guy you simply don’t want to meet in the A-gap. Just ask Anthony McFarland about what happened when he did today in seven shots on an inside zone run.
Alexander came flying through like a missile and stunned McFarland short of the endzone to just stand him up. He did the same thing to Darius Hagans a day ago. Over the middle of the field on a mesh route, Alexander smoked Cody White, too. He is becoming a guy the Steelers understand has been around the game, but the hitting aspect is expected.
“Man, I tell you, he’s a veteran,” head coach Mike Tomlin said. “He might be new to us, but he’s not new to environments like this or to professional football and it’s showing, showing in a hurry.”
Alexander has stumped running backs at the line of scrimmage at least five times since yesterday in pads. It is a clinic at this point on the identity of his game. But regardless, Alexander is setting a tone for what to expect, and it seems like most of the inside linebackers are following suit in that mentality.
