Lengthy Steelers DL Willington Previlon Needs to Outperform Peers in Training Camp to Secure Practice Squad Spot
The Pittsburgh Steelers added Willington Previlon via waivers in June to bolster the bottom part of their defensive line depth. With a majority of their defensive line being solidified before training camp begins, it leaves guys like Previlon in a sticky situation.
The reason that Previlon finds himself in a rough situation in Pittsburgh is because there are at least eight guys that are or are expecting to be apart of the Steelers defensive line rotation in 2024. Those include Cam Heyward, Keeanu Benton, Larry Ogunjobi, Isaiahh Loudermilk, Dean Lowry, DeMarvin Leal, Logan Lee and Adams.
With the Steelers typically only carrying six defensive lineman into the season, it even leaves that group with a few odd men out. The Steelers currently have 12 defense lineman on their offseason 90-man roster and will trim that in half by the time the season starts.
With likely three guys headed there from that group of nine and Jonathan Marshall who spent all season on the practice squad, it makes the dash for a spot on the practice squad a rapid one for guys like Previlon and Jacob Slade.
Regardless, Previlon will be given the chance to showcase his talents in front of the Steelers coaches in Latrobe when camp opens later this week. If he can outperform his peers, Previlon could be a practice squad candidate. Until he proves it, the signing of Previlon appears just as a roster filler type of move.
The things that are going in Previlon’s direction in regard to making the Steelers 53-man roster is his 7-foot wingspan and his experience in the league. While he has not recorded a regular season snap, Previlon has been bouncing around practice squads since 2020. This means coaches like having him around and it should not shock anybody if he sneaks onto the practice squad in 2024.
